| 8-day trip ~ Grade: Easy to Moderate |
Fiji is a south seas paradise of romantic, palm-fringed lagoons wafted by intoxicating tropical breezes, but the lure here is by no means just the idyllic setting--it's also the Fijians themselves. We get an insiders look at Fiji in the company of Trip Leader extraordinaire Keni Madden. Keni grew up in these islands and his extended family and local connections bring us a warm welcome as we travel among some of Fiji's incredibly scenic isles, including the remote Yanucas. We kayak and snorkel in jewel-blue waters, beachcomb on untouched coasts, drink kava with our village hosts, and enjoy the peaceful rhythms and enchanting culture of a tropical paradise.

1-3 Taveuni, Fiji / Sea Kayaking / Yanuca Islands We fly to the grass airstrip on beautiful, mountainous Taveuni, the "Garden Isle" of the eastern Fijian archipelago, meet Keni and the crew, and take a motor launch to the isolated Yanucas. Keni is related to most of the villagers on the one inhabited island in this beautiful, remote archipelago, and he will introduce us to the village chief at a sevu sevu ceremony, the traditional Fijian ritual of drinking kava. After we're welcomed to the Yanucas, we set out to explore by sea kayak and take time to swim and beachcomb along pristine stretches of crescent beaches. Our camp is on Maqewa, a beautiful, deserted tropical isle we have all to ourselves. Delightful picnic lunches and sunset fish barbecues add to our pleasures. We'll find that the azure waters of the Yanucas teem with undersea life, and we may be lucky enough to swim and snorkel with sea turtles and porpoises. These waters provide the perfect sea kayaking playground for kayakers of all abilitiesbeginners are welcome and can learn the basics quickly.
4-5 Qamea Island By motor launch, we move to hilly, forested Qamea Island and set up our second camp on a white-sand beach in an unbelievably beautiful bay. On Qamea, we are hosted by a Fijian family that has lived here for generations. The kayaking, birdwatching, and snorkeling opportunities are wonderful, the setting is incomparably idyllic, and the fringing reefs allow for paddling in protected waters full of brightly colored tropical fish.
6-8 Taveuni / Depart From thatched bungalows set amid 56 acres of fragrant gardens on mountinous Taveuni, we explore the island's spectacular eastern side, with its huge waterfalls cascading down a 5,000-foot-high mountain"showering" in them is quite a treat. Our farewell dinner is a traditional lovo feast with Keni's extended family, complete with dancing and singing. Depart Day 8.
